Fortepiano (or piano) is the most popular keyboard, and maybe most popular musical instrument. The first piano was created in 1700 by the Italian master Bartolomeo Cristofori, who was trying to create a more responsive keyboard instrument for touch and play than the harpsichord. Inventor of the first fortepiano called his new instrument "gravicembalo col piano e forte" (or “gravichembalo with piano and forte").
Mass production of the piano for the first time was organized by Gottfried Silbermann in 1740’s. Over the next few centuries technology of the piano production has improved in Europe and America that eventually led to the creation of the modern form of this instrument. But this was a long way and we know that in history also was in use pianos with unusual and sometimes strange forms.
Firstly the instrument seamed with harpsichord with big wing, while others took the form of a clavichord or spinet. Another type of first pianos was so-called “orphics” – a small portable piano from wood produced in the period from 1795 to about 1830. The instrument has 4 octaves and small keyboard. Orphics was fixed on an artist’s laps or hung on a ribbon on his neck.
But the most interesting type of pianos was so-called «giraffe-pianos». Remarkable fact: it was a piano with pyramidal form that represented upright pianos harp that was designed to save space in the room. In essence, strings of these instruments were mounted vertically. Therefore the height of their cases was determined by the length of the bass strings. Nevertheless, the form of such instruments was associated with the animals that nave longest necks!
